A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to provide a flatter, more pleasing appearance to the abdomen through the removal of excess fat and tissue. Good candidates for tummy tuck surgery include men and women who are physically healthy, realistic in their expectations and looking to minimize the appearance of a protruding abdomen. This procedure is particularly helpful for women who have undergone multiple pregnancies. It’s typically recommended that individuals intending to lose weight or become pregnant postpone the surgery.

Tummy tuck surgery is usually performed with either general anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. For a traditional tummy, the incision typically runs from hipbone to hipbone just above the area while a second incision is made around the navel to free it from the surrounding tissue. The incision will result in a noticeable scar. A partial abdominoplasty usually involves a shorter incision and may not require the second incision around the navel. Once the incisions are made, the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and lifted up to reveal the vertical muscles of the abdomen. The muscles are tightened, the skin flap is stretched down and the excess removed, and a new hole is cut for the navel and then stitched into place. The incisions are then stitched closed. The procedure typically takes between two and five hours to complete.

After surgery, dressings are applied and a drainage tube may be inserted beneath the skin. Some pain or discomfort may occur and pain medication can help to control this. Bruising, swelling and numbness may also occur. Surface stitches are typically removed within five to seven days while deeper sutures may come out in two to three weeks. A support garment may need to be worn for some time. Patients are typically able to return to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities should be postponed for four to six weeks.

The potential complications associated with tummy tuck surgery may include adverse anesthesia reaction, bleeding, blood clots, excessive scarring, infection, poor healing, and the need for additional surgery.
