Ear correction, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure which minimizes the appearance of protruding ears by setting them back to a more natural and aesthetically pleasing position. The best candidate for ear correction surgery is an individual who is physically healthy, realistic in their expectations, and looking to improve the appearance of protruding ears. Ear correction can be performed on anyone over the age of five, though it is most often performed on children.
Ear correction is often performed with general anesthesia for younger children or with local anesthesia and sedation for older children and adults. The incisions made during surgery are typically placed behind the ears and tend to be well-concealed. Surgery most often takes between two and three hours to complete.
The potential complications associated with ear correction surgery include adverse anesthesia reactions, blood clot, excessive scarring, infection, mismatched or artificial-looking ears, and recurrence of the protrusion.
