With Restylane, a topical anesthetic is usually sufficient though a nerve block may be used instead. Anesthesia is mixed in with the collagen so additional anesthesia is usually not required though a topical anesthetic may be used for those particularly sensitive to pain. These products are injected with a needle into the areas to be treated. Collagen typically requires overfilling, while Restylane usually requires underfilling. These are quick procedures that can be performed in a surgeon’s office.
After collagen procedures, some minor discomfort, stinging or throbbing, along with minor bruising and swelling, may occur. Redness is also common and typically fades within twenty-four hours. Patients can immediately return to their normal activities. There is minimal discomfort associated with Restylane procedures, though some minor bruising and swelling can occur. As with collagen procedures, patients can immediately return to their normal activities.
There are few complications associated with Restylane, though bumps may result from overfilling. The potential complications associated with collagen may include allergic reaction, infection, abscesses, open sores, skin peeling, scarring and lumpiness. Both procedure are not permanent; the results with Restylane can last up to six months while collagen results tend to last between three to six months.
