Anesthesia is typically not required during the laser hair removal procedure, though some patients may receive a topical anesthetic if necessary. During the procedure, a low-energy laser is passed over the area being treated and the laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, thus disabling hair growth. The final results are achieved some months later as the hair growth cycle dictates. Though multiple sessions are required, each treatment can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the area being treated.
There is little to no downtime associated with laser hair removal and patients an usually resume their normal activities right away. In some cases, slight reddening or swelling can occur on the treated area. It’s important to limit sun exposure during the first few days after treatment and sunscreen is recommended thereafter. There are few risks or complications associated with laser hair removal.
