Facelift surgery is most often performed with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation, though general anesthesia is sometimes used. The actual surgery takes several hours to complete. The incisions are typically concealed within the hairline and around the ear. An additional small incision may be made underneath the chin if the chin needs work as well. During the surgery, skin and soft tissue of the face and neck are lifted, tightened in a deep plane and the excess is removed. The muscles of the neck may also be tightened and fat may be removed from the neck with liposuction.
After surgery, bruising and swelling are common and usually fade within two to three weeks. The skin may also feel somewhat numb and tender. Stitches are typically removed within one week’s time. Patients typically find that they can return to work within ten to fourteen days after facelift surgery, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for two or more weeks and sun exposure will need to be limited for several months. Men often find that they need to shave in new locations, such as behind the ears, as beard-growing skin is repositioned during surgery.
As with all types of surgery, there are potential risks that can occur with facelift surgery. These may include adverse anesthesia reaction, asymmetry, bleeding, excessive scarring, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing. On average, the results of a facelift last between five to ten years, at which time some patients opt to undergo a touch-up procedure.
