Scar revision procedure may take place in a surgeon’s office-based facility, an outpatient surgery center or a hospital. Procedural times will vary according to the particular technique used. Some form of anesthesia may be used depending upon the scar revision technique but generally may include local anesthesia, topical anesthesia, or general anesthesia.
For skin resurfacing procedures like dermabrasion and laser resurfacing, the upper layers of skin are removed using an abrading tool or laser light. Surgery may be used to remove scar tissue, cover up a scar with healthy, unscarred skin moved from another location, or move a scar to another, less visible area. Recovery after scar revision will vary according to the particular technique used, though patients are typically able to return to work and other normal activities within one to two weeks.
