Botox is a popular non-surgical injectable that is comprised of the cosmetic form of botulinum toxin. When injected into areas of the skin, Botox temporarily reduces or eliminates the appearance of lines or creases. Botox is commonly used to treat frown lines, forehead creases, crow's feet, and thick neck bands. The injectable works by blocking the nerve impulses, thereby temporarily paralyzing the muscles responsible for
wrinkles. Botox is typically administered in a physician's office and is a simple, quick, ten-minute procedure resulting in less visible wrinkling and a smoother, more refreshed appearance to the skin. Good candidates include men and women who are physically healthy, realistic in their expectations and looking to improve the appearance of lines or creases of the skin. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders may not be appropriate candidates for Botox. Botox has also been proven effective in treating migraine
headaches, muscle spasms of the neck and eyes, and excessive sweating.
Though anesthesia is typically not required during the administration of Botox, the treated area can be numbed with an anesthetic cream or cold pack. During the procedure, several tiny injections will be administered directly into the muscles of the treated area. The sensation of the injection is similar to a pin prick, resulting in minimal discomfort. There is no downtime or recovery
associated with Botox, though some localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness or bruising may occur at the injection site. Normal activities can typically be resumed immediately after the procedure. Patients will begin to see results within five to seven days with the maximum effect occurring in about two weeks. The results of Botox are not permanent, typically lasting up to four to six months. Repeated injections will be needed in order to maintain the results.
